Here are some things you didn't know about Chicago's three rivers

(Did you know there were three?)

Our rivers contain more than 70 species of fish, and are home to otters and muskrats. The rivers form the backbone of a wide—and transforming—array of industry. And more and more people are using them every year—many without any knowledge of the "rules of the road."

As part of our Great Rivers Chicago initiative with the City of Chicago, Friends of the Chicago River and others, MPC is exploring different aspects of the Calumet, Chicago and Des Plaines rivers in a series of feature stories, the first two of which you can now find on our website. They're chock full of information we bet you didn't know—like how long it can take a loaded barge to stop.

Curious to learn more and see some parts of the river you might recognize? Don't miss the video that youth media makers at Free Spirit Media produced with us!

It's sad but true—Illinois is leaking people.

2015 continued a sobering trend in Illinois: We lost more people than any other state. While many headed for sunny, warm climates, others moved just next door. Why are people leaving? And what can we do to keep them here? MPC Director of Research Chrissy Mancini Nichols explores.
