About MPC

A better, bolder, more equitable future for Chicagoland starts here

We are changemakers. Conveners. Planners. Policy experts. In support of the love of the place we call home, together we create a way forward for our region that is better, bolder and more equitable for everyone.

In 1934 we were founded as the Metropolitan Housing Council by a group of concerned citizens fighting inequity. Prohibition had just been repealed, the Great Depression was loosening its grip, and laborers across the nation were building the roads and dams and bridges that still knit together our nation today.

We at the Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC) work on the issues that span decades and administrations—from tenement housing in the ‘30s, to sensible growth after World War II, to employer-assisted housing at the turn of the Millennium, to the Cost of Segregation today.

We believe in a region where all residents reach their full potential. Where everyone can get around on good roads and transit. Where water stays safe to drink. Where our communities are diverse and thriving.

By working together with experts and community groups we change perceptions, conversations, and the status quo. This is about data, about lived experience, about policy and conversation. Together, we’re unleashing the greatness of our region.

Our mission

Since 1934, the Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC) has been dedicated to shaping a more equitable, sustainable and prosperous greater Chicago region. As an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, MPC serves communities and residents by developing, promoting and implementing solutions for sound regional growth.
