On Oct. 18, the Metropolitan Planning Council presented the results of four months of work with Chicago neighborhoods on zoning reform.
On Oct. 18, a capacity crowd filled the conference room at Baird & Warner as the Metropolitan Planning Council unveiled the latest phase in its Shaping Communities Through Urban Design project. Over the past few months, MPC asked leaders in four Chicago neighborhoods about what they would like to see in a new zoning ordinance. MPC collaborated with community organizations in each of the neighborhoods – Back of the Yards, Bucktown/Logan Square, North Lawndale and South Shore – and with consultants Camiros Ltd. on the four-month project.
The roundtable began with Lori Healey, principal at the architecture firm of Perkins & Will and member of the Mayor's Zoning Reform Commission, who described the Commission's structure and procedure. Then, Pat Dowell and Margie Muchin Goldblatt, co-chairs of MPC’s Zoning Working Group and members of the Urban Development Committee, described the Shaping Communities project and presented the communities’ recommendations. The recommendations cover the issues of housing, parking, communication, and commercial, industrial and open space as they relate to Chicago’s neighborhoods.
