New Issue Brief focuses on improving transportation design and function

Context Sensitive Solutions is a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to roadway design that has been catching on around the nation. This Issue Brief discusses best practices, highlights recent examples, and encourages implementation of a statewide policy.

Historically, roadway design has been geared to serve the automobile without consideration to other uses or the surrounding environment. Context Sesitive Solutions (CSS) is a modern technique that encourages community input, takes into accout all users of a transportation facility, and considers "the context" for which the facility is being designed. This Issue Brief explores CSS best practices, with examples from around the country, and provides tips on how to successfully implement CSS in Illinois.
