The Metropolitan Planning Council is soliciting nominations
for its 2003 Burnham Award for Excellence in Planning, which honors projects or
plans that promote sound public policies and planning procedures. The award
carries with it a $5,000 cash prize.
Last year’s winner
was Will County for its Land Resource Management Plan. The plan
contributed numerous advances in
planning to northeastern Illinois, including a flexible "forms and use concepts"
land use designation system, an open space preservation element that recognizes
the importance of waterways and farmland, and a framework for bringing
municipalities on board.
“With the annual
Burnham Award, we not only honor effective and innovative projects but also
improve the regional planning process by encouraging similar efforts,” said MPC
Vice President of External Relations Peter Skosey.
All are encouraged
to apply, including those who have applied in the past. This award is largely
targeted toward projects that are completed or have demonstrated promise over a
longer period of time.
The Burnham Award
recipient will be a project that:
- Promotes and implements sensible planning
and development policies;
- Encourages public participation and follows
an open process;
- Provides long-term benefits to the
community and its surroundings;
- Is provocative, balances realistic
expectations with vision; and
- Is innovative, breaks new ground in
bettering the planning process.
Nominations must be
submitted by March 3, 2003. A committee of MPC board members and other
volunteers from around the six-county metropolitan region will review
them.
The Burnham Award
will be presented at MPC’s Annual Meeting Luncheon this
spring.
