Interactive workshop will illustrate how new workbook can help solve development problems
Elected and appointed officials, business leaders and
other partners in south suburban community development will participate in the
interactive workshop, “What’s your development plan?” featuring a simulation
game designed to illustrate how a new workbook,
Sensible Tools for Healthy
Communities
, can help municipalities solve development
challenges.
The workshop, which is free and open to the public, takes place Thursday,
June 30, 2005, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Orland Park Civic Center, 14750
Ravinia Ave., Orland Park, Ill.
“During the workshop, each table of participants will perform a different
part – plan commission, community members, developers, and media – in a
role-playing game based on a real-life development proposal,” said Kristi
DeLaurentiis, south suburban coordinator of the Metropolitan Planning Council
(MPC). “They’ll use the workbook as a guide to help them decide whether or not
to ‘approve’ the proposal.”
“The Village of Riverdale has been working with MPC, the Campaign for
Sensible Growth and Urban Land Institute Chicago to revitalize and redevelop a
privately owned townhouse development in our town,” said Riverdale Mayor Zenovia
Evans, president of the Mayors and Managers Association. “Time and again we’ve
referenced this workbook for the ideas and principles it presents, and as we
continue to evaluate new development proposals, we will reach for the book as a
guide.”
The workshop is sponsored by the
South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association and the Southwest Conference of
Mayors, in partnership with the Campaign for Sensible Growth and MPC.
The
Sensible Tools
workbook was produced by the Campaign for Sensible Growth, Metropolitan
Mayors Caucus, and MPC, and is available as a PDF-download at the Campaign’s Web
site, www.growingsensibly.org/sensibletools .
