Workshop Will Help Kankakee Communities Plan Development

Interactive workshop will illustrate how hands-on workbook can help solve development dilemmas

(Bourbonnais) … Aiming to guide new development in one of Illinois’ fastest-growing counties, Kankakee County elected and appointed officials, business leaders, and other partners in local community development will participate in the interactive workshop, “What’s your development plan?” featuring a simulation game designed to illustrate how the innovative Sensible Tools for Healthy Communities workbook can help municipalities solve development challenges.

The workshop, which is free and open to the public, takes place Tuesday, April 25, 2006, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Olivet Nazarene University’s Weber Center, 1 University Ave., Bourbonnais, Ill.

“During the workshop, each table of participants will perform a different part – plan commission, community members, developers, and media – in a role-playing game based on a real-life development proposal,” said Kristi DeLaurentiis, manager of local government and community relations for the Metropolitan Planning Council. “They’ll use the workbook as a guide to help them decide whether or not to ‘approve’ the proposal.”

The workshop is sponsored by the Kankakee County Government and Kankakee River Valley Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Campaign for Sensible Growth and Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC). The Sensible Tools workbook was produced by the Campaign for Sensible Growth, Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, and MPC, and is available as a PDF-download at the Campaign’s Web site, www.growingsensibly.org/sensibletools.
