On Dec. 1, 2011, MPC hosted Better Commutes, Less Congestion: Employers Unlock the Region's Gridlock, a roundtable discussion of the Commute Options pilot program. Jeffrey Rehm of W.W. Grainger described that company's success in encouraging employees to switch from driving to taking transit by providing a comfortable express bus between the nearest Metra station and their corporate campus. Suzanne Carlson of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) detailed efforts to implement Commute Options at three CPS schools, and pointed out some of the challenges discovered thus far. Gabe Klein, commissioner of Chicago Dept. of Transportation, outlined various steps the City is taking to enhance the pedestrian, cycling, and transit facilities for commuting.
