As Congress prepares to debate the reauthorization of the
nation’s transportation legislation later this year, House Speaker J. Dennis
Hastert will outline the Illinois congressional delegation’s priorities for the
bill, as well as identify the kinds of well-planned projects he would like to
see included in the bill. Hastert will share his views on transportation,
planning for growth and other regional issues affected by congressional action
before a crowd of more than 800 business, government, and civic leaders at the
Metropolitan Planning Council’s (MPC) Annual Meeting Luncheon, at 12:00 p.m., on
Monday June 23, 2003, at the Hilton Chicago and Towers.
“Our region -- with its growing population of transit users,
aging and overburdened highway network, and position as the nation’s freight hub
— needs to keep traffic flowing smoothly,” said MarySue Barrett, MPC president.
“We’re fortunate to have Speaker Hastert and such a strong delegation in
Congress working to ensure Illinois gets its fair share.”
Following
the Speaker’s keynote address and a brief question and answer session, MPC will
make news of its own with a special announcement about its future. “We’ve
sparked some important policy changes in the last few years, and we’re at a
critical juncture in our history,” explained Barrett. MPC will also welcome the
newly elected members of its Board of Governors.
MPC
will also present its 2003 Burnham Award for Excellence in Planning to the
Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) for its Main Campus Master Plan. The
award will be accepted by IIT President Lew Collens and Board of Trustee member
Dirk Lohan, of Lohan Caprile Goettsch architects, who developed the master plan
-- a broad, forward-looking and comprehensive vision that unifies the physical
campus and integrates it into the surrounding Bronzeville neighborhood. Lohan is
also the grandson of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who did IIT’s original 1940 plan
and designed its most architecturally significant buildings.
Founded
in 1934, MPC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan group of business and civic leaders
committed to serving the public interest through the promotion and
implementation of sensible planning and development policies necessary for a
world-class Chicago region.
