U.S. Senate Candidates to Address Federal Government's Role in Regional Issues at Upcoming Joint Appearance

Keyes, Obama to headline Metropolitan Planning Council's 2004 Annual Meeting Luncheon

(CHICAGO) ... Just four weeks before Illinois voters elect a new U.S. Senator, former U.N. Ambassador Alan Keyes (R-Calumet City) and Ill. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Chicago), will appear jointly for the first time before an expected crowd of some 800 business, government and civic leaders at the Metropolitan Planning Council’s Annual Meeting Luncheon, Oct. 7, 11:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., at the Chicago Hilton & Towers, 720 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago.

In what promises to be a lively and provocative presentation, Mr. Keyes and Sen. Obama will each separately share his perspective on the federal government’s role in addressing issues critical to businesses and residents in the Chicago region, including transportation priorities, housing options, quality education, and economic opportunity. They will respond to specific questions posed by MPC in advance. CBS2 Chicago Political Editor Michael Flannery will moderate the discussion.

“We consistently deliver a knockout program at our Annual Meeting Luncheon, and this year certainly will be no exception,” said MarySue Barrett, MPC president. “Mr. Keyes and Sen. Obama have not made any joint appearances during this campaign, and we’re honored that they agreed to come together to speak directly to the issues that MPC and our partners consider paramount in the Chicago metropolitan region.”

Also at the luncheon, MPC will present its 2004 Burnham Award for Excellence in Planning to the City of Chicago for its Calumet Area Land Use Plan. City leadership catalyzed a strong working relationship among Southeast Side business people, community leaders, conservationists, and residents, resulting in a broad plan that, for the first time in the Calumet region, encourages sustainability and synergistic co-existence between industry and natural space.

MPC also will welcome newly elected members of its Board of Governors, including incoming Chair John A. Buck, chairman and CEO of The John Buck Company, a nationwide real estate and development firm headquartered in Chicago.

Founded in 1934, MPC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan group of business and civic leaders committed to serving the public interest through the promotion and implementation of sensible planning and development policies necessary for a world-class Chicago region.
