WPB announces Chicago’s largest public art prize

This post was written by John Mitchell, MPC research assistant

As part of its Placemaking Chicago Initiative, in 2009 MPC partnered with WPB (the Special Service Area for Wicker Park and Bucktown neighborhoods) to engage hundreds of local residents in the reimagining and planning of the Polish Triangle in the Wicker Park Bucktown neighborhood.

Now, WPB is calling for artists to contribute their own take on “reimagining” the Wicker Park Bucktown area.

In its ongoing effort to “promote the prosperity and unique qualities” of the Wicker Park Bucktown neighborhood, this summer WPB will award Chicago’s largest public art prize for the winner of its “Make Believe: Reactivating Vacant Spaces in WPB” art installation program.

WPB is calling for artistic proposals for art installations in vacant storefronts and spaces in Wicker Park Bucktown. Proposals should be submitted by May 26, 2010. After a juried competition, winning submissions will be installed by late June and will remain on display throughout the neighborhood from July till October.

For more information on the art proposal submission process, see http://makebelieve.wegotitinwpb.com/.

Sounds great, and I've definitely passed this on to some of my creative friends. One question: What's the big prize?

Good question, Mandy. The prize is $5,500 and growing!
