11:00 – 11:45 a.m. Reception
12:00 – 1:45 p.m. Luncheon & Program

With the U.S. economy showing signs of recovery, American voters are looking to their elected officials to make decisions and support reforms that will protect us from the kind of devastating downturn we have experienced the last two years.

In Illinois — which has a structural deficit estimated at $12.8 billion, among the highest foreclosure rates in the nation, and an infamous reputation for political shenanigans — voters are weary and wary. They have the opportunity, in 2010, to elect both a new U.S. Senator and Governor. Before they do, they want to know where the candidates stand on the issues that are essential to the ongoing economic and environmental health of our state and country.

In a non-debate format, the candidates will have the opportunity to share their plans and priorities for achieving livable communities, improving coordination among federal agencies, maximizing the next federal surface transportation bill, and implementing the region’s 2040 growth and development plan.

At the luncheon, MPC also will honor Whistler’s Crossing, Riverdale, Ill., with the 2010 Burnham Award for Excellence in Planning. Learn more about the award

MPC’s 2010 Annual Meeting Luncheon is expected to attract more than 1,000 business, civic, public, and community leaders from around the region. It has featured a series of high profile speakers the last several years, including four high-ranking members of President Obama’s cabinet and White House team; presidential candidate surrogates in 2008, the U.K.’s Right Honorable Tessa Jowell, MP, minister for the Olympics and London in 2007; Illinois gubernatorial candidates in 2006; Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley in 2005; U.S. Senate candidates in 2004; and former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert in 2003.

The Metropolitan Planning Council acknowledges the very generous contributions of our sponsors.

    good job!!!

  2. 2. Concerned Citizen on May 25, 2010

Why isn't LeAlan Jones speaking at this event? The Green Party is now a fully recognized party in Illinois and they deserve to be heard... especially when it comes to planning issues.

  3. 3. Voting Green on June 11, 2010

Yes, I'll second the inquiry - why isn't LeAlan Jones included? You're not providing equal time to all candidates for US Senate, and clearly showing a bias for the establishment, status quo - and not looking at what's happening around the country. People are sick and tired of the same old bi-partisan song and dance, they want someone that will listen to them, and not just do corporate work.

  4. 4. Not Happy on June 13, 2010

LeAlan Jones, author, journalist, youngest winner ever of the Peabody Award for journalism, long active in Chicago politics is the only African-American candidate in the race for U.S. Senate, to replace the only African-American in the Senate today. And you are going to exclude him? Don't you think you have an obligation to present all options and let the voters decide, instead of presuming who the contenders will be and thereby trying to affect or engineer the outcome?

  5. 5. Curious on June 13, 2010

Yes, I would also like to know why LeAlan Jones isn't included.

  6. 6. Conrad Floeter from Evanston on June 13, 2010

I'll add my voice to those above. LeAlan Jones is a credible candidate from the third 'established political party' In Illinois, the Illinois Green Party. ILGP has a slate of state-wide candidates on the ballot. The party platform is focused on improving "the ongoing economic and environmental health of our state and country."
Please reconsider inviting LeAlan to your candidate forum.

  7. 7. Jon Komodo from Park Ridge on June 13, 2010

I heard LeAlan speak at a recent forum and found him a breath of fresh air with a number of interesting ideas. I don't understand why he is not considered by the planning council to be part of this event. It doesn't speak very highly of your impartiality.

  8. 8. Please Include All Our Options-Mary from Oak Park on June 14, 2010

It is unfortunate indeed that the members of the MPC, event sponsors, the public, and business, community and civic leaders will not be allowed to hear the candidates of all three recognized parties at the IL-Is there a Cure? luncheon next week. I had the opportunity to hear him speak when he first announced his candidacy and was thoroughly impressed by his innovative plans for IL. In this challenging time for our State, we need to learn what each candidate has to offer, so we can make an informed decision in the November election.

Please feature Journalist LeAlan Jones, IL Green Party nominee for U.S. Senate, at the MPC meeting on June 21st as well!

  9. 9. Downstate Green on June 14, 2010

I agree with the others - please invite Mr. Jones, so that candidates from each of the established parties in Illinois may be heard, and so that those who attend the event can be truly informed of all their options. Thanks!

  10. 10. Enough is Enough from Chicago, IL on June 14, 2010

Why not just invite everyone that is going to be on the ballot for the office of Senate... and Governor, and whatever other political office is being promoted/endorsed by the Metro Planning group. OR, is this the biggest donor sponsors talking/controlling the Metro Planning Council?!

Why is every organization so afraid of hearing a non-traditional, people-oriented candidate, that is NOT taking corporate money or PAC bribes, and just representing the people. No conflicts of interest that Kirk or Gianolous face - whether to represent their biggest donors, banks, insurance companies - or to do what's best for real, breathing, tax-paying, voting people.

As we've seen with Wall St. bailout, single-payer fiasco, looking the other way when it comes to regulating/enforcing Big Oil and other polluters, and the biggest military budget ever in history approved this year, the current Congress is not listening to people, and 100% representing corporate interests. Enough is enough.

  11. 11. Bruce Samuels from Oak Park, IL on June 14, 2010

Why isn't LeAlan Jones speaking at this event? The Green Party has been a fully recognized party in Illinois since 2006 and deserves to be heard... especially when it comes to planning issues.

Jones offers a unique point of view.

  12. 12. Mandy Burrell Booth from Metropolitan Planning Council on June 17, 2010

You asked, and we listened! LeAlan Jones will be speaking at our event on Monday. We hope you'll join us for the event! Tickets are still available.

  13. 13. Dominik on June 19, 2010

LeAlan is getting 14% in the Polls. It was wise of you to include him.

  14. 14. Duminda on February 5, 2011

This must have been a real well attended Luncheon with so many people from all walks of life wanting to listen to what the candidates had to say about their plans for the future of Illinois which would have had very far reaching effects on them for the elections!! It’s heartening to see that the wishes of the readers were respected and LeAlan Jones, the only African-American candidate for the race for U.S. Senate, was also invited to speak!!

What an aminazg video! Thank you, Karen, for this aminazg gift to NAWBO. It really tells the story so well of the invaluable and vibrant organization we belong to. Let's forward this to anyone considering membership.
