With the U.S. economy showing signs of recovery, American voters are looking to their elected officials to make decisions and support reforms that will protect us from the kind of devastating downturn we have experienced the last two years.
In Illinois — which has a structural deficit estimated at $12.8 billion, among the highest foreclosure rates in the nation, and an infamous reputation for political shenanigans — voters are weary and wary. They have the opportunity, in 2010, to elect both a new U.S. Senator and Governor. Before they do, they want to know where the candidates stand on the issues that are essential to the ongoing economic and environmental health of our state and country.
In a non-debate format, the candidates will have the opportunity to share their plans and priorities for achieving livable communities, improving coordination among federal agencies, maximizing the next federal surface transportation bill, and implementing the region’s 2040 growth and development plan.
At the luncheon, MPC also will honor Whistler’s Crossing, Riverdale, Ill., with the 2010 Burnham Award for Excellence in Planning. Learn more about the award
MPC’s 2010 Annual Meeting Luncheon is expected to attract more than 1,000 business, civic, public, and community leaders from around the region. It has featured a series of high profile speakers the last several years, including four high-ranking members of President Obama’s cabinet and White House team; presidential candidate surrogates in 2008, the U.K.’s Right Honorable Tessa Jowell, MP, minister for the Olympics and London in 2007; Illinois gubernatorial candidates in 2006; Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley in 2005; U.S. Senate candidates in 2004; and former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert in 2003.
