WGN-TV to announce "What Makes Your Place Great?" winners tonight

Tune in to WGN-TV tonight at 5 p.m. for the announcement of the winners of the MPC-Chicago Architecture Foundation "What Makes Your Place Great? Your Secret Corner of Chicagoland" contest.

Twenty-four places from across Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana were nominated, and after 4,782 online votes and a lively discussion among a panel of Placemaking experts, four locations emerged as the region’s best undiscovered places. Though we can't tell you who they are just yet, the countdown is officially on!

MPC and CAF thank everyone who participated in the contest, whether by nominating or voting for your favorite “undiscovered” public space, or even encouraging someone else to nominate a place. Whether your favorite won or lost, it's places like these that make Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana a wonderful place to live. We hope you'll check out all of the nominees at PlacemakingChicago.com or by using this handy Google map featuring nominees from both the 2009 and 2010 contests.

To prove a point in 2006 I decided to run the Manitoba Marathon. I was exeremtly out of shape (around 225lbs). I had never run a marathon before but I was convinced I could run a marathon by eating King-sized Whopper meals. The first time I ran I could taste the iron in mouth as my lungs labored. But 5 and half months later I finished the marathon 3:41:08. It was an very expensive diet, but was worth the effort proving everyone wrong. I kept a video diary, and I was very skinny at 189 lbs. For me 189 lbs is light because I have also weighed 283 lbs in my lifetime. To this day I am still convince that a person could qualify for the Boston Marathon eating hamburger, fries, and a diet coke. Yes, a diet coke because fat people are not allowed to drink regular soda. I currently weigh 240lbs but figure it could be done within a 15 month period. Your story inspired me!Curt
