Win tickets to WLS-Channel 7's Feb. 17 mayoral debate, co-sponsored by MPC

Chicago's top mayoral candidates will participate in WLS-Channel 7’s debate on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m., at the Oriental Theater, in the Loop. MPC is co-sponsoring the debate along with several other civic organizations, and we are excited to extend some of our tickets to you, our blog and Facebook friends.

But we're not just giving them away. We're trading tickets for ideas. Here's how you can enter to be there for the Feb. 17 mayoral debate:

1. Check out MPC's Keepers and Seekers guide, which we provided to all of Chicago's mayoral and aldermanic candidates to brief them on policies and positions that will keep Chicago—and the entire metropolitan region—competitive, equitable and sustainable. Keepers are current programs and initiatives led by the City of Chicago that should continue or be expanded. Seekers are initiatives, programs and activities that need nurturing and increased support from the city to succeed

2. In 100 words or less, tell us what you think is Chicago's top Keeper or Seeker and why. Maybe you agree with our selections and want to add your own spin. Or maybe you think we missed something that matters to you and your community. Either way, we want to hear from you.

3. Post your Keeper or Seeker idea by Monday, Feb. 14, at 5 p.m., as a comment on this blog or a comment on our Facebook pageBe sure to tell us if it's a Keeper or a Seeker.

4. MPC will pick our favorite essays and notify the winners on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Good luck—and please share this opportunity with your friends and neighbors!

I completely agree that the number one seeker should be the transit. As someone that relies on it for transportation everyday, it is frustrating to see the increasing cost and decreasing reliability of the CTA. This needs to be a top priority!

Seeker: The ideas MPC spells out share one facet (aside from being good): they all rely on data. With more than 280 municipalities in our region and no clear leadership on municipal data sharing, the next Mayor of Chicago should adopt an aggressive and standards-setting data sharing plan .Cities like San Francisco, New York, and Washington D.C. have made data transparency a priority and are empowering citizens to connect with city services in new ways as well as leading in their regions by example. Only with the right data can we identify efficiencies and better share resources throughout our region.

Chicago is one of the top world class cities. But how is it that it struggles to initiate a comprehensive recycling program? Chicago is being left behind in a green world and needs to catch up. The city rarely enforces the law that landlords must have the option to recycle. There are hardly any blue bins or drop off sites.

I believe that the Keeper CREATE should be maintained or even expanded. As a youth living in the city of Chicago, I see how much pollution and disrespect our city goes through on a daily basis. All I can think about is how my generation and my children’s generation will be the ones who have to take on this battle. If Chicago can find a way to efficiently improve our environment and transportation, I would be happy to continue living here and raise my children in the city. Steps should most definitely be taken in this direction.

Sorry this was late, my class ran late I hope I can still be considered. Thank you!

Congratulations (and thanks!) to Christina, Justin, Ben, Hannah and Leon! Their comments on our blog and Facebook about what they'd like to see Chicago's next mayor do to improve our city earned them each two tickets to be in the audience at this Thursday's mayoral debate. Way to go!
