Car Free Week is September 22-28

Biking to work is one way to celebrate Car Free Week.

To encourage commuters to consider alternatives to driving alone, the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) and the Active Transportation Alliance are sponsoring this year's Car Free Week, which runs from September 22-28.   The theme of this year's campaign is "Don't Sit in Traffic-Join the Movement."

World Car Free Day is Sunday, September 22. Since 2009, RTA and the Active Transportation Alliance have been involved in this effort to encourage area commuters to consider alternatives to driving alone.

In 2013, they've upped the ante.  If you're willing to take the pldege for seven days and track your carfree trip, you'll have the chance to win great prizes including:

  • Civia Loring bicycle
  • Chicago "Staycation" package
  • Two Zipcar packages
  • Two Divvy Bikeshare annual memberships
  • Two 2014 MB Financial Bank Bike the Drive Registrations
  • Two 2014 Four-star Bike & Chow registrations

And there are more great prizes to win in September, including a Get a Grip Cycles bike tune up, or Commute Options Provider Chicago Water Taxi 10-ride pass (good for 2014).

You can also win on social media.  Talk about your Car Free Week trips, using #carfreeme for the chance to win Divvy Bikeshare Day Passes, Pace gift bags, and Transit Tees shirts.

It's easy to sign up.  Visit www.drivelesslivemore.com, and click on the "Car Free Week" image (or "register") button.  Once your profile is confirmed, you're ready to start tracking trips.

Click on the "My Trip Tracker" link near the top-left to start entering trips on the interactive calendar.  You can log in transit, bike, rideshare, walking and telecommutes to accumuulate points.   As you accumulate  points, check the "My Rewards" page to see which Car Free Week prizes can be won.  You'll automatically be entered to win a prize as you become eligible for them.
