Air Quality Awareness Week is April 28-May 2

Illinois Partners for Clean Air

Breathe Easy Man is Illinois' official Clean Air superhero.

To celebrate Earth Month, MPC’s staff will participate in Air Quality Awareness Week Monday, April 28, through Friday, May 2. The week’s sponsors—the Illinois Partners for Clean Air, a nonprofit coalition dedicated to improving air quality through voluntary actions, and the U.S. Environmental Protection—have planned a full slate of transportation-related action days, which individuals, businesses and organizations can partake in to help reduce air pollution.

As a member of the Partners for Clean Air Steering Committee—and as an organization that, through projects such as the Commute Options pilot, works to improve regional transportation options so that people don’t have to drive everywhere they go—MPC is encouraging staff and partners to participate in each of the following themed weekday actions:

Cycle Monday, April 28. What is one way to feel better, save money and make your morning commute? Ride a bike! Use the Bike Commute Calculator to determine how much money you saved by not driving, the calories you burned and the amount of toxic pollutants that were kept from the atmosphere.

RideTogether Tuesday, April 29. Carpool to as many locations as possible. Riding together decreases the amount of emissions in the air. Visit Pace’s Rideshare website for more information about ridesharing.

Walk Somewhere Wednesday, April 30. Walk to nearby locations instead of driving. Increasing the number of steps you take will improve your health.

No Idle Thursday, May 1. Avoid idling your car or truck. Implement a “no idle policy” at your office. Take the No Idle Pledge.

Car Free Friday, May 2. Riding public transportation not only saves money and gas, but eases congestion and helps improve air quality. Learn about transit options for your commute at www.rtachicago.org.

Visit Illinois Partner for Clean Air’s website to learn more about how to participate in Air Quality Awareness Week, and to sign up for the EnviroFlash Challenge to receive daily air quality alerts.
