A new orchard collaboration promises better stormwater management—and delicious fruits
As part of the City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development’s Resilient Corridors Project, two vacant parcels along Fifth Ave (between Albany and Sacramento) will be repurposed for a community orchard. The project will divert and direct stormwater from surrounding streets and alleys into green infrastructure elements such as trees, native gardens and urban agriculture all to be built on city-owned land.

MPC in partnership with Elevated Chicago will be working with the Department of Planning & Development and Garfield Park Community Council to support the facilitation of three community meetings that will engage local residents and stakeholder in the design of the orchard. The meetings will be held on September 11th, September 25th at 2946 W. Madison and October 22nd at Marshall High School (3250 W Adams St) from 6-8pm. The meetings will adapt MPC’s Corridor Development Initiative model to facilitate discussions on current conditions and green projects in the corridor, aid community in building design scenarios for the orchard and plan for stewardship of the orchard by community members.
