A lecture by Marisa Novara (Metropolitan Planning Council) and Francesca Santaniello (Politecnico di Milano).

Community development corporations have played an important part in shaping America's neighborhoods since the 1960s. Over the years, the rise of community development intermediaries has paralleled that of CDCs, with the growth of one fueling that of the other. Given its central role in mobilizing capital, providing technical assistance, and minimizing risk, we ask to what extent the intermediary role has relevance in other contexts. Using Northern Italy as a case study, we examine its community development context through the historical development of philanthropy, culture and nonprofits, and its nascent and diffused network of CDCs. Finally, we use Healy’s three-tiered matrix of governance interactions to propose an intermediary model to strengthen, develop and expand northern Italy’s fledgling network of CDCs.
