Street art, like this example in Old Pasadena, helps activate vacant, empty, or forgotten space. When executed effectively, it fosters community.

Increasingly, placemaking activates empty or forgotten public spaces in our cities and towns. Artists are often at the forefront of these projects, creating unique and engaging displays of public art geared toward building community. Presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, this panel will explore how artists, arts and cultural organizations, and creative people can get involved with a variety of new placemaking initiatives in Chicago, and will also highlight successful examples of placemaking that feature the arts as a core element or a key partner.

Moderator: Marisa Novara, Project Manager at the Metropolitan Planning Council. Panelists to date: Janet Attarian, Project Manager for the Make Way for People program at the Chicago Department of Transportation, and Adam Natenshon, formerly with Brinshore Development
