Four of the many incredible places submitted to the Space in Between contest

Since the Metropolitan Planning Council kicked off the Space in Between contest in June, 46 placemakers from Milwaukee to northwest Indiana have sent in their pictures, their videos and their stories about how they took a vacant space and filled it—not with bricks and mortar, but with people. With ideas. With art. With things that grow and feed and nurture us.

Come and be inspired by them just as we have. Join us for a free event on Nov. 1, as we recognize the many incredible people behind all the places in the 2012 Space in Between contest. Shuttered retail was transformed into art galleries and bookstores. Vacant land became a canvas for community art, tales of motherhood, and rites of passage for young women. Performances were staged in abandoned railyards and long-vacant lots. And scores of community gardens grew not only vegetables, but a sense of community.

Winners will receive cash awards and coveted campaign spots with Groupon Grassroots, a valuable venue to raise funds and awareness for projects around the region. Groupon's Patty Huber will be on hand to award the winners.

MPC launched the 2012 Space in Between contest to learn more about how creative people around the region are taking back long-since forgotten spaces. Have we ever learned—and so can you. In addition to honoring our winners, there will be ample time to talk with the contest's experienced placemakers from all over the Chicago region. Learn from these experts how to transform a vacant space in your neighborhood into a community asset. Let them help you figure out how to turn your eyesore into a project, and from a project into a place.

The event is free, but please register today to join the celebration on Nov. 1.
