Placemaking comes in all shapes and sizes, from people spots to murals and special art displays.

MPC Associate Kara Riggio will speak at this event.

Discover how design can make a difference! Explore the design of several neighborhoods and arts spaces—and learn about the vision for their futures. How can the arts can be a catalyst for neighborhood change, economic development and revitalization?  Learn about and tour the University of Chicago Arts Incubator in Washington Park, Dorchester Projects, the proposed Pullman Artspace and other city-wide initiatives to understand the steps individuals and organizations have taken to execute their vision to make change in their own neighborhoods.

Along the way, hear from a host of placemaking and community arts experts:

  • Kara Riggio, Associate, Metropolitan Planning Council
  • Marlease Bushnell and  La Keisha Leek, University of Chicago Arts Incubator, Washington Park
  • Theaster Gates, Director of the Arts and Public Life Initiative at the University of Chicago and artist and founder of Dorchester Projects
