"Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood and probably will themselves not be realized."
Daniel Burnham
Planning is powerful—in all its forms and at every scale. That idea has been at the heart of the Metropolitan Planning Council's (MPC) work for eight decades. Since 1988, MPC's annual Burnham Award for Excellence in Planning has recognized long-term planning efforts throughout metropolitan Chicago for their ability to shape the course of our region over time. Since 2009, our annual Placemaking challenge has highlighted a different approach to planning, by celebrating the creativity and ingenuity of those who are taking a lighter, quicker, cheaper approach to transforming their own communities.
We are excited to celebrate planning—in all its shapes and sizes—with you at a free evening event on Monday, Sept. 22, where we will fête the winners of the 2014 Burnham Award and 2014 Placemaking challenge, Old Place New Tricks. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle will accept the Burnham Award on behalf of the winner. The Chicago Tribune's Mary Schmich will emcee the event, and beer, wine and hors d'oeuvres will be provided.
