...A noble, logical diagram once recorded will not die, but long after we are gone be a living thing...Remember that our sons and our grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty.

—Daniel Burnham, 1907

David Schalliol

The 606 reinvented and reimagined underused city space to create a recreation and transportation asset.

There are shelves in the world stuffed with good plans that never see the light of day. To celebrate great plans that do, Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC) established the Burnham Award for Excellence in Planning in the 1980s to recognize visionary planning efforts with demonstrated results in the Chicago metropolitan region.

Honoring The 606

We are pleased to announce that the City of Chicago, Chicago Park District, Trust for Public Land and Friends of Bloomingdale Trail will be honored Sept. 29, 2015, with MPC’s Burnham Award for Excellence in Planning, for The 606, which is reimagining and redeveloping underused city space as a new regional asset that connects people, parks and communities.

The event also will highlight and raise funds for MPC’s Allard and Wayfinding fellowships, which provide paid work experience to talented young people interested in pursuing careers in planning. MPC also will raise a toast The Chicago Community Trust on its 100th anniversary.

Live music, food and drinks

The event is open to the public and will include refreshments compliments of Revolution Brewing and live music.

The winners will give remarks at approximately 5:30 p.m., with time to mingle before and after. Donations collected in advance and at the door will directly support MPC’s Allard and Wayfinding fellowships.
