For decades, American towns and cities have been chasing short-term growth at the expense of long-term prosperity. That’s the central thesis in Charles Marohn’s new book, Strong Towns: A Bottom-Up Revolution to Rebuild American Prosperity.

Marohn suggests that the modern approach to urban development just doesn’t work, with cities locking themselves into future insolvency due to high-risk, high-cost infrastructure investments that never generate enough wealth to support themselves. Instead, cities large and small should focus on incremental investments, minimizing risk and maximizing financial strength and quality of life.

Charles is the president and co-founder of Strong Towns, a nationally recognized non-profit media organization working to shape the conversation on growth, development, and the future of cities. He has two decades of experience as a land use planner and certified Professional Engineer (PE). Charles was recently named #10 on Planetizen's list of the Top 100 Most Influential Urbanists.
