Recently, many planning professionals and advocates have had to come to grips with how their work within the built environment can help to perpetuate institutional racism and injustice. With this new revelation, it’s more important than ever to take an active role in dismantling systems that do not protect society’s most vulnerable communities. This workshop with MUSE Community + Design will pinpoint actions for how self-identified allies can leverage their power and privilege to create meaningful advancements towards diversity, equity, and inclusion within their organizations.

Speakers:

Nina Idemudia, AICP, understands firsthand how the built environment shapes the lives of society’s most vulnerable populations. This fuels her passion for empowering citizens to be change agents through planning. Prior to moving to Chicago, Nina was a planner for the City of Los Angeles where she worked on Current and Long-Range Planning, plus Performance Management. She specializes in equitable community development, inclusive outreach, and organizational innovation for large metropolitan areas. Nina understands planning as a framework to instill lasting change in the world which is why she is dedicated to changing the field of planning, inside and out.

Romina Castillo has been working closely with Chicago communities in different capacities since obtaining her Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2014. Romina's recent work has been to increase and improve open space, build community and school gardens, and advocating for equitable access to active transportation, healthy foods, and neighborhood revitalization. A Mexico City native, Romina has always been fascinated by urban communities and their relationship with the built environment. She volunteered for Slow Roll Chicago for three years and became its Interim Executive Director. Romina also engages and volunteers in her own community, including as a board member of the Friends of the Bloomingdale Trail.
