Red Bike and Green

Red Bike and Green Chicago spring kick-off, 2012.

This roundtable will feature the work of several innovators improving public health, economy and the environment in Chicago’s South Side communities of Bronzeville and Woodlawn.

The Bronzeville Bicycle Collaborative (BBC) is capitalizing on recent transportation infrastructure investments, such as a new bike lane on King Drive and Divvy, Chicago’s new bike share program, to encourage biking among residents. Bronzeville Bikes is one of the first active hubs of the BBC and in its first year has successfully implemented a number of initiatives to create a bicycling culture in Bronzeville. In Woodlawn, the PlayStreets initiative is encouraging young residents to get active. Playstreets provides support to community-based organizations to overcome barriers to play and promote safety, active lifestyles and open public spaces. PlayStreets events temporarily close city streets in communities such as Woodlawn, Little Village and South Chicago to provide residents with safe places to play outside.

Join us as panelists Eboni Hawkins, Progams Manager for Bronzeville Bikes and co-founder of Red Bike & Green - Chicago and Cortez Trotter, Executive Director of the Woodlawn Public Safety Alliance share how these efforts are creating stronger, healthier residents and communities. The panel will be moderated by Johnnie Owens, Director of Community Building for Centers for New Horizons in Bronzeville. Karen Atwood, President of BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois will provide opening remarks.
