For centuries, lead was used to make many household products. From paint to pipes, lead was both incredibly prevalent and incredibly dangerous. Laws now limit how lead can be used, but hazards remain.

The water crisis in Flint, Michigan has elevated the issue of lead in drinking water. Research shows many municipalities in our region—including the City of Chicago—have lead service lines. However, this is a complicated problem to fix—ownership, responsibility, identification and cost of replacement all pose barriers. Regardless, lead in drinking water is a public health risk that needs to be addressed today.

Join MPC as we discuss this issue with experts. We’ll feature two municipalities who are forging ahead with innovative programs and community education, and we’ll hear about the latest funding and financing opportunities available for implementing replacement programs in our region.

Roundtable Panelists:

  • Darrell King, Water Production Bureau Chief, City of Evanston
  • Nancy Quirk, General Manager, Green Bay Water Utility
  • Chris Meister, Executive Director, Illinois Finance Authority

Special Introductory Remarks: Senator Heather Steans (Illinois, 7th District)
