The number of miles Americans are driving is declining for the first time in the hundred-year history of the automobile. Urban-dwelling Americans, particularly “Millennials," increasingly prefer active transportation choices like walking or cycling and taking public transit, ride-shares or taxis. This isn’t a consequence of higher gas prices, or even the economic downturn, but rather a groundswell of individual decisions to be a lot less dependent on cars. If cities like Chicago want to remain competitive and grow and retain their younger populations, they need to plan for this new way of living.

In Street Smart, former New York City Traffic Commissioner Sam Schwartz, a.k.a. “Gridlock Sam,” one of the most respected transportation experts in the world, explains how an urban transformation is underway to create smart streets that are more vibrant, active and livable.

Join the Metropolitan Planning Council and Sam Schwartz for a night of sharp insight to uncover how American cities became so beholden to cars and why the current shift away from that trend will forever alter America’s urban landscapes.

Copies of Street Smart will be available for purchase at the event.

The cost of the event is $15 and includes light refreshments. Seating is limited, so please register in advance.
