How we think about the real estate of our streets is changing, as people walk, bike and use public transit more. How do cities reimagine and redesign their streets and public spaces to fit these new lifestyles?

Janette Sadik-Kahn

As commissioner of the New York City Dept. of Transportation from 2007 to 2013, Janette Sadik-Khan undertook an ambitious and creative effort to transform the tough streets of New York into dynamic, safe spaces for pedestrians and bikers. In her book, Streetfight: Handbook for an Urban Revolution, Sadik-Khan describes the effective and dramatic approach she took to make the streets of New York safer, less congested and more pedestrian and retail friendly.

Learn more about Streetfight from the Wall Street Journal and Next City.

Join the Metropolitan Planning Council and Janette Sadik-Khan for a discussion about why cities need to “read their streets” to successfully redesign public space that works for everyone.

Copies of Streetfight will be available for purchase at the event.
