Chicago was recently named America’s third most racially segregated metro. In 2010, more than 82 percent of Whites and African-Americans in Chicago would have had to move in order to be evenly distributed throughout the city. What impact does this intense separation of residents’ lives have on our city, its occupants and our collective well-being?

In her book, The South Side: A Portrait of Chicago and American Segregation, Chicago native Natalie Moore shines a light on this issue through reported essays, showing the life of these communities through the stories of people who live in them.

Natalie Moore is the South Side bureau reporter for WBEZ, Chicago’s NPR–member station. Her work has been published in Essence, Black Enterprise, Chicago Reporter, In These Times, Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune.

Join the Metropolitan Planning Council and Natalie Moore for a discussion on the important impact of Chicago's historic segregation and the ongoing policies that keep it that way.

Copies of The South Side will be available for purchase at the event.

Doors open at 5 p.m. The program will begin at 5:30 p.m., with time to mingle before and after. Registration is $15 and includes drinks and light refreshments. Space is limited, so please register in advance.
