There is a 30-year gap in life expectancy between America’s wealthiest and poorest neighborhoods. This trend holds true in Chicago, where life expectancy varies by neighborhood, income, and race.
In his 2017 book, The Death Gap: How Inequality Kills, Chicago-based physician David Ansell exposes the structural roots of the life expectancy gap: racial and economic discrimination. Ansell makes the case for why inequality should be considered a societal illness, and provides action steps to move toward health equity.
Dr. David Ansell is the Senior Vice President for Community Health Equity at Rush Medical Center in Chicago. He is an internal medicine physician, social epidemiologist, and health activist. Dr. Ansell is also the author of the 2012 book County: Life, Death, and Politics in Chicago’s Public Hospital.
