Renovated affordable homes to be showcased in Chicago Lawn this Saturday

A number of renovated affordable homes in the Chicago Lawn community on Chicago’s Southwest Side will be featured during a home tour this Saturday, June 12. These homes are among a group of Chicago properties that have been rehabbed through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, the goal of which is to turn vacant and foreclosed properties into affordable housing.

Tours will run from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and will start from the offices of Greater Southwest Development Corporation, 2601 W. 63rd St.

Tour participants will be able to walk through the neighborhood, visit the homes and talk to area residents and community leaders to learn about the many amenities offered in the community. Information about the homes and how they can be purchased will be available the day of the tour.

The federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program was created as a part of the 2008 Housing and Economic Recovery Act, which authorized almost $4 billion for state and local governments to buy and rehab foreclosed properties. Chicago received $55 million in the first round of NSP funding and $98 million in the second round. Chicago has identified 29 community areas that have been hardest hit by foreclosures where it will focus its NSP funds.
