Making unexpected art: Chicago Public Art Group's Aug. 15 event celebrates concrete

Come watch artists manipulate concrete into art, and have a chance to make your own!

If you’re like me, you’ve always wished you had a chance to make a handprint (or footprint) in wet concrete. Well, Chicago Public Art Group’s event on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 5 p.m., could be your big chance. The Art of Concrete Art, hosted by the family-owned Ozinga concrete company, provides guests with a blank and unconventional canvas: concrete.

Dinner will be catered, and Revolution Brewing is bringing the libations. Guests will get a tour of the Ozinga “concrete yard,” complete with demonstrations of floating concrete (whatever that means) as well as the permeable stuff that allows stormwater to filter through. There will be artists working with wet concrete and “out-of-the-box uses of concrete in the design center,” according to the event website. And, of course, you get to play with wet concrete. What’s not to like?

Ozinga’s facilities are at 2222 S. Lumber Str., just west of Chinatown. Registration is required, and tickets are $40, to benefit Chicago Public Art Group. When you think about it, it's a small price to pay for your name in concrete.
