Commutes across the region don't match up with commuters' expectations.
Panel of TDM experts to discuss benefits of reducing volume of solo drivers for commuters, regional mobility
(Chicago) … On Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, the Metropolitan Planning Council will release “Chicago Demands Transportation Management,” the culmination of a two-year Commute Options pilot that explored the potential for transportation demand management (TDM) in the Chicago region. The report will be released at a noontime Roundtable featuring a panel discussion by participants in the pilot and a TDM expert who manages similar strategies in other U.S. cities.
Of the 10 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S., Chicago is the only one without a formal TDM framework. The Commute Options pilot surveyed employees at 16 regional businesses to discover their commute patterns and provide employers with suggestions on expanding and better communicating the commute options available. Based on data collected throughout the pilot, MPC developed recommendations for a future TDM strategy for the region, including how it should be led, funded and operated.
Panelists will consider what worked and what didn’t during the pilot, what employers should know when offering commuting alternatives to driving solo and what the future holds for Chicago-area TDM.
Media are invited to attend the event free of charge, but must register in advance with MPC Communications Assistant Ariel Ranieri at aranieri@metroplanning.org or 312 863 6020.
