Street lighting districts are one example of single-purpose governments in Illinois. Illinois has somewhere around 7,000 units of government.
We all know by now the old refrain: Illinois' got 7,000 units of government, and that's a lot more than anybody else. The question is, what is anybody doing about it?
On Tuesday, June 21, MPC President MarySue Barrett joined WGN Radio's Justin Kaufmann for his show The Download, to talk about how to make Illinois' local governments more effective for residents and businesses.
MarySue told stories of governments so small that they only oversee one railroad overpass, successes with consolidating governments that only serve one purpose, and ways local governments are proactively improving to be more efficient and make lives better for Illinois residents. She also talked about Transform Illinois, a coalition of groups around the region, including MPC, working to support more efficient and effective local government in a variety of ways, from policy change to on-the-ground assistance.
This was MarySue's second talk with Justin; she also talked to him in May about why the Chicago region is losing population. She'll be joining him the third Tuesday of every month to talk about how to fix what's not working in (and for) our region. Tune in to WGN Radio 720 AM!
